Finding the Right Anger Management Class
It can be difficult for most consumers of anger management, or any specialized field for that matter, to know what to look for in a provider of a traditional class. Anger management classes can be found in many settings, but can vary greatly in quality, format, curriculum, and training of the provider. First off, anger management should be viewed as a class and not a mental health illness. Learning skills in anger management is much the same as learning any other skill based activity. One must be exposed to the proper training, then encouraged to practice those exercises correctly. Through repetition and positive reinforcement the skill will be learned and assimilated into ones new behavioral approach.
Here are the skills that one should look for in a quality anger management course:
Assertive Communication
Stress Management
Improving judgment and impulse control
Empathy and Emotional Awareness
Forgiveness
Expectation Management
Responding instead of reacting
Taking time-outs and changing self-talk
These skills should be taught using a structured approach with a well known anger management curriculum. Participants should have the option to receive some type of pre/post assessment to help determine both a baseline at the onset of the course and a way to measure success at the end of the class. Classes should be taught either by a licensed mental health professional with additional training in anger management or a trained and certified anger management professional. The class should be in either a group format or can be done on a one/one basis commonly referred to as anger management coaching.
